Siblings compete together in city spelling bee

ANDERSON — Anderson Christian School's Michelle Soden will be doing a lot of cheering during The Herald Bulletin's 2014 Spelling Bee.

That's because Soden has not one but two children competing against each other — Joshua, who is a student at Anderson Christian Middle School, and Rachel, who is a fifth-grader at Anderson Christian Elementary School. Both of them won their respective grade and school bees in order to secure an invite to the city spelling bee.

Soden said it makes her very proud as both a parent and a teacher to see both of her children succeed in the spelling bees.

"I was impressed they both wanted to study for it," Soden said. "It was something extra, and they both chose to study for it and they won."

Now, they have been helping each other tackle new words for the city bee, set for tonight in the Anderson City Building at 6 p.m. Joshua and Rachel will be going up against 16 other children from local schools.

Soden credited her children's competitive nature for pushing them to do their best in everything they do, including the spelling bees.

"They are very competitive children," Soden said. "They both play basketball, they are both very sporty, which I think brings out their competitiveness."

She said with them being so close in age Joshua and Rachel tend to compete against each other in everything they do, but she was happy to see them studying together.

Joshua and Rachel both said they were excited about the city spelling bee and were ready to compete against each other.

Soden said tonight will be an interesting night. She and her husband, Chad, will be pulling double cheering duty as their children take on others for a shot at claiming the spelling bee title.

The winner of the bee will receive a trip for two to Washington, D.C., to compete in the 2014 Scripps National Spelling Bee. A new Merrian-Webster's dictionary and a one-year subscription to Encyclopedia Britannica Online are also up for grabs.
