Police release drivers’ names in head-on collision

Condition of woman airlifted unknown

CHESTERFIELD, Ind. — Police have released the names of the drivers in a head-on collision Saturday, but there was no word on the condition of a woman airlifted from the scene.

The accident occurred around 12:25 p.m. on Indiana 32 near Chesterfield when a red pickup truck and silver sedan collided.

Edith Lycan, 75, of Anderson, was airlifted to St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis, according to Madison County Sheriff Ron Richardson.

Her three grandchildren, passengers in her vehicle, were transported to St. Vincent Anderson Regional Hospital. Troy Farley, 5, had no visible injuries; Cardin Brizenden, 7, had a burn to the neck and shoulder from the seat belt; and Carmrie Brizenden, 10, had a possible concussion, the sheriff said Sunday.

This is what occurred Saturday, according to Richardson:

Rochelle L. Ellingwood, 42, of Chesterfield, was traveling east on Indiana 32 in a Buick when she had stopped to make a left turn into a parking lot.

Lycan was driving a 2000 Mercury behind her and had moved around Ellingwood into the west lane of travel on Indiana 32, striking a 1999 Chevrolet pickup driven by Darryl E. Rogers, 51, of Alexandria, head-on.

It is unknown at this time why Lycan tried to go to the left of Ellingwood, the sheriff said.

After hitting the truck, Lycan’s vehicle spun and the rear passenger side bumper struck the driver’s side of Ellingwood’s Buick.

The Chesterfield Union Township Fire Department, EMS, police and Madison County Emergency Management Agency crews shut down traffic and worked to free Lycan, who was trapped in her vehicle and had to be extricated.

Ellingwood was treated at the scene for minor injuries and Rogers refused treatment before the Sheriff’s Department transported him to a local hospital for a blood draw.

The accident is still under investigation, Richardson said.
