Swifty gas stations close with no warning

Details of the closings are unknown

ANDERSON — Signs have been covered, entrances blocked and no one is answering phones at the Swifty gas stations in Madison County.

Judy Rhoades of Pendleton said the closings were sudden and customers were given no warning.

“We noticed it yesterday,” Rhoades said. “That was quite a surprise.”

Rhoades said she lives less than two minutes from the Swifty Gas, 6933 Indiana 67.

“I hate it,” she said of the closing. “They were always pleasant people there and nice to deal with, but they always had good gas prices. That was the main place where we bought our gas.”

With the Swifty closed, Rhoades said the nearest gas station is a Ricker’s, at 7175 Ind. 67, but she is not sure it will be her first alternative.

“I don’t know, maybe I will go to the Speedway,” she said. “Ricker’s gas is more expensive than the Speedway or Swifty’s.”

A woman who answered the phone at Swifty Oil Co. Inc. in Seymour said the company does not give statements to the press.

The company’s founder, Don W. Myers Sr., died July 25. Myers, who was 92, owned approximately 180 combination gas stations at the time of his death, according to a Hoovers.com company profile. The company owned gas stations in Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky.

In September, media sources reported that five Swifty stations in the Louisville area were closed abruptly.
