Domestic scuffle leads to strangulation charge

ELWOOD, Ind. — An Elwood man was arrested on suspicion of strangulation, a Class B felony.

Anthony Pierce, 57, was arrested by Elwood police Tuesday after an altercation with his wife, Anita Pierce, 51, and her son, Jacob Henderson, 22.

The three lived in a duplex with the Pierces at 319 Main St. and Henderson at 317 Main St.

According to Elwood Police Chief Sam Hanna, Pierce grabbed Henderson by the throat and cut off his airflow. Pierce’s fingernails left scratches in Henderson’s face.

Pierce also shoved Anita Pierce against the wall two times before shoving her to the floor. When police tried to intervene, Pierce resisted them and kept grabbing for his wife, according to Hanna.

No explanation was given for why the altercation began.

In addition to strangulation, Pierce was preliminarily charged with domestic battery, battery and resisting law enforcement, all Class A misdemeanors.

Hanna said Pierce was taken to the hospital after his resistance and then to the Madison County Jail. No other injuries were reported.
