Moped driver seriously injured in crash on Indiana 13

LAPEL, Ind. —

Alcohol is suspected to be a cause of a serious moped accident Tuesday night that left a Noblesville man in critical condition, authorities said.

Jason T. Spidel, 42, suffered serious head injuries and internal injuries and was transported by helicopter to St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis on 86th Street, according to a press release from Madison County Sheriff's Department Maj. Brian Bell.

According to the release, Spidel was driving a VIP moped northbound on Indiana 13 near West County Road 100 North at about 7 p.m. when he lost control of the vehicle. According to witnesses, the moped left the roadway and flipped at least once, and Spidel was ejected and landed on the pavement. The witnesses also told police that the moped crossed the center line of Indiana 13 numerous times before finally leaving the roadway on the east side.

Responding crews closed off Ind. 13 from West County Road 100 North to West County Road 10 North. The site of the accident was almost the exact same spot as a two-vehicle accident on Sept. 15 that injured three on Ind. 13 near County Road 10 North.

The Madison County Sheriff’s Department was assisted by Lapel Police Department, Lapel Fire Department and Madison County Emergency Management.
