Police search neighborhood after bank robbery

Robber struck teller in head with gun

ANDERSON, Ind. —

Two masked men walked into a westside bank Monday, struck an employee in the head with a gun and fled with an undisclosed sum, police said.

Late Monday, police were reportedly zeroing in on possible suspects and were questioning area residents.

The robbery was reported about 10:40 a.m. when police were called to First Merchants Bank, 2825 Nichol Ave.

During the robbery, one of the robbers struck a teller in the head with a gun. The teller, who was not identified by police, was treated for minor injuries, police said.

The bandits fled in a car that they reportedly ditched before getting into another vehicle. Late Monday, police had found a white Taurus which they believed was used in the robbery, said Anderson Police Department Lt. Paul Boulware.

Boulware said police had received "significant leads" by 4 p.m. Monday.

Later Monday, police were seen searching an address in the 2700 block of West 18th Street. A woman, who identified herself as a relative, said the resident of the home was being questioned about two vehicles that had been involved in the robbery.

Tammy Hall, director of bank protection for First Merchants Bank, declined to comment on the robbery or about any employees who were working at the time of the incident.

Adam Santagate, a manager at Family Dollar, 2827 Nichol Ave., said this is not the first time someone has tried to rob a business in the area. The Family Dollar is located directly behind the First Merchants Bank.

About three weeks ago, someone dressed in black and wearing a mask attempted to get into the Family Dollar and pointed a gun at Santagate, who is a former member of the military. The robbery was unsuccessful and the person got away on foot, he said.

“I’ve been in war, but never would have thought I would be at the other end of the gun in the U.S.,” Santagate said. “Not in Anderson.”
