Affordable Care Act open enrollment ending soon

ANDERSON — As the March 3 deadline for Affordable Care Act enrollment approaches, many have yet to take action to avoid penalties for non-coverage, said Deborah Hester, a certified enrollment navigator Plus One Enterprises in Anderson.

Each lawful resident of the United States, with certain exceptions, is required to be enrolled in coverage that meets the standards set forth by the ACA by the March 31 deadline or face penalties. Some are eligible for exemptions to this requirement, but unaware that they too must take action in order to avoid the penalty.

Dependent upon where they fall within the poverty guidelines and with the available affordability programs, many individuals and families may be eligible for coverage below $100 a month — and some with zero premium — so it is important to check out the Health Insurance Marketplace.

The Marketplace also makes referrals to Medicaid and CHIP if a person or a family member is assessed eligible, and a navigator can also help apply for HIP, the Healthy Indiana Plan, if you meet those guidelines. Navigators are state-certified individuals who assist individuals and families with understanding their rights and responsibilities.

For individuals that cannot find coverage that meets the affordability guidelines or that may be experiencing a qualified hardship that makes coverage hard to afford, there are exemptions available. To learn more, find a local navigator through
