Car crashes into home after driver falls from vehicle

ANDERSON — A 19-year-old man was taken to the hospital with severe abrasions and lacerations after police say he opened the door of the vehicle he was driving and fell out of his car, police said.

Sgt. William Casey of Anderson Police Department said Darius Rhodes was driving north on Arrow Avenue near 17th Street when he opened the car door and slipped out of the car.

“He was not wearing a seat belt,” Casey said.

The car, traveling about 35 miles an hour, continued north before running through an attached garage that had been converted into a living space in the 1600 block of Arrow Avenue, he said.

“No one is in the home at the time,” Casey said.

Rhodes was alone in the car at the time of the accident, Casey said. Initial police reports say Rhodes was “showing off” when he opened the door of his vehicle. Officials with the city were also called to inspect and temporarily secured the building.

“He had severe road burns to his legs and arms,” Casey said of Rhodes’ injuries.
