Sunshine and higher temperatures bring area residents out in droves Sunday

Chance of thunderstorms by Wednesday

ANDERSON — The first truly nice day of this still early spring brought area residents out of their homes in droves to bask in a little sunshine and enjoy temperatures that reached the mid-50s.

Old and young bicyclists tried out their wheels on the paths at Shadyside Park on Sunday afternoon, while motorcyclists tried out their wheels on city streets.

Brittney Hansen’s first day off in more than a week was perfect timing. She had the chance to take a walk in the sun with her brother, Brycen, her two children Zaydia and Zariyah Porter, and niece Adrienne Hansen.

The day was a sharp contrast to Saturday’s cold rain and hour or so of — ugh, yet one more shot of snow.

Kids at Shadyside Park’s playground practically had to stand in line to play on swings and at other equipment as parents looked on.

While his wife and daughter played on some of that equipment, Mike Van Slyke and his son, Noah, engaged in a hard game of catch next to the shelter.

“We went out to lunch and, looked at some baseball equipment and ended up here. My wife and daughter are on the playground, so we decided to throw the ball around,” Van Slyke said.

And he was glad for the opportunity to spend some time outside.

“Indiana has definitely had some intense weather,” Van Slyke added. “This was the worst winter in as long as I can remember.”

Over at Shadyside Lake, Jason Boggan, son Dylan and their friend Brian Tomlinson had just completed the second test of their 1981 Mirrocraft 14-foot fishing boat.

Boggan’s father bought the boat about three years ago as a hobby project. After moving to Ohio from North Carolina, the boat sat for a year, until Jason Boggan took it off his dad’s hands.
