Local merchants prepare for a Black Saturday

ANDERSON — Nancy Moneyhun said some of the city’s best shopping won’t happen on Thanksgiving or Black Friday — it will be on Saturday.

“We will have lots of fun,” said Moneyhun.

Moneyhun is a partner of Moneyhun's Fine Gifts & Furnishings, 115 W. Eighth St., which is one of more than 200 businesses in Madison County participating in the 2013 American Express Small Business Saturday on Nov. 30.

Small Business Saturday is celebrated around the nation by small businesses to raise awareness for shopping opportunities with local merchants. The Shop Small movement kicked off in 2010 and Moneyhun’s has participated every year since its inception.

“It helps make people aware of what small businesses are doing for the economy,” Moneyhun said.

American Express card holders can qualify for special offers by shopping at the local businesses in addition to supporting local merchants and finding bargains.

According to the National Federation of Independent Business and American Express, 2012 consumers who shopped locally spent about $5.5 billion on holiday sales.

With 100 service, 98 shopping, 73 dining and more than a dozen entertainment and travel businesses participating in the event in Madison County, the local shopping possibilities are many and varied.

This year the Herald Bulletin has filled the role of a Neighborhood Champion for small businesses in the community. The newspaper has partnered with area businesses in order to promote some of the best shopping opportunities and unique gift ideas for the holidays.

“This is important for the Herald Bulletin because it is important for our community,” said Pete VanBaalen, advertising director for the Herald Bulletin. “A town is only as strong as the businesses that make up that town or city.”

Jude McIntyre, owner of McIntyre Jewelry 715 E. Eighth St., said she will be opening her store on Saturday to participate in the event. She said buying from local merchants offers shoppers added benefits.
