Man suspected of robbing restaurant arrested

ELWOOD — A man is in custody after being connected to two separate burglaries at a local restaurant.

Christopher D. Rittenhouse, 21, of Elwood, is accused of breaking in, vandalizing and robbing the Mr. Happy Burger in Elwood on Indiana 28 on two different occasions, most recently June 7. Madison County Sheriff's deputies arrested Rittenhouse on Wednesday and as of Thursday night, he was still in Madison County Jail on $20,000 bond.

According to Madison County Sheriff's Department Major Brian Bell, the restaurant was broken into at night on June 7. The owner, Brian Kane, reported money, equipment and a donation jar had been taken from the store.

Sheriff's Department detective Brett Wright and Elwood Police detective Nick Oldham took over the investigation and gathered evidence from the burglary. Authorities already believed Rittenhouse, a suspect from a previous incident at Mr. Happy Burger, was responsible.

Detectives tracked down Rittenhouse and brought him in for questioning. After obtaining a warrant for his home on South H Street in Elwood, police found the stolen items and charged the man with burglary, a Class C felony.

According to Bell, Rittenhouse eventually admitted to the crime.

It's unclear what connection, if any, Rittenhouse had with the restaurant. Kane could not be reached for comment on this story.
