Chicago teens charged with attempted murder, criminal gang activity

ANDERSON, Ind. — Charges were filed Thursday against three Chicago teenagers who are suspected of the severe beating of another teen with a baseball bat June 27.

Donovan Ball, 18; Ruben Rosales-Mezar, 18; and David Rivera, 17, were formally charged with attempted murder and criminal gang activity, Madison County Prosecutor Rodney Cummings said.

The three suspects were being held at the Madison County Jail on a 72-hour hold while officers conducted an investigation.

Police spokesman Lt. Paul Boulware said the injured youth, Sergio Ivan Torres, 15, of Anderson, is listed in stable condition at the hospital and has been communicating with detectives.

According to the probable cause affidavit, Torres told police several males jumped out of a brown van and attacked him while he was walking home. Torres identified Ball as one of his attackers.

Torres was transported to St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis, where it was determined he had suffered multiple skull fractures. Initially listed in critical condition, he was in an induced coma for several days. An attending physician told police that Torres’ injuries were consistent with being struck with a bat.

The case has been assigned to Madison Circuit Court 1. Initial hearings have yet to be scheduled.
