ELWOOD, Ind. —
An off-duty Grant County Sheriff’s Department deputy was killed in a traffic accident in northern Madison County Friday afternoon.
Michael Andry, 49, of Converse, was riding a motorcycle on State Road 13 near County Road 1400 North, just north of Elwood, when a pickup truck made an unexpected turn into the motorcycle’s line of traffic. The driver of the truck and Amy Weasley, a passenger on the motorcycle, were injured in the accident and were still hospitalized late Friday evening.
According to Madison County Sheriff Ron Richardson, the accident happened at about 3:34 p.m. The Harley Davidson motorcycle operated by Andry was headed south toward Elwood on State Road 13. The 2011 Chevrolet pickup truck being driven by Carey Webber, 26, of Anderson, was headed north.
According to the investigation by the Madison County Sheriff’s Department\, Webber didn’t see the motorcycle and made a left turn onto the county road. The motorcycle collided with the passenger side door of the truck.
All three were transported to St. Vincent Mercy Hospital in Elwood after the accident. Andry was pronounced dead on arrival, and Weasley was airlifted to St. Vincent Indianapolis on 86th Street to be treated for critical injuries. Webber is still at St. Vincent Elwood and his condition is unknown, Richardson said.
“It’s a very emotional time for public safety and the Grant County Sheriff’s Department,” Richardson said. “They’ve lost one of their loved ones and a good officer.”
Richardson said he and Grant County Sheriff Darrell Himelick are coordinating the investigation and will release more information as it becomes available and appropriate.
Grant County is directly north of Madison County, and its sheriff’s department is located in Marion.
