Rape charge added in murder case

Brother-in-law held without bond

ELWOOD, Ind. — An Elwood man accused of killing his sister-in-law had an additional charge filed against him Thursday for allegedly raping the 66-year-old woman.

George Arthur Knotts, 68, now faces four felony counts in connection with the assault, which detectives believe happened either on July 6 or 7. Knotts was arrested and charged three days after police found the body of Linda C. Speer in her Elwood home in the 1800 block of North C Street.

According to the probable cause affidavit released Thursday afternoon, police were dispatched to the home after Speer's daughter found the woman's body on the night of July 8. Speer had been choked with a pink scarf and stabbed 14 times with a sharp object, police said. There was also evidence she had been sexually assaulted.

Knotts, who is being held in the Madison County Jail without bail, declined to speak to The Herald Bulletin.
