Alexandria teen charged with reckless homicide

Arrest in connection with March crash

ALEXANDRIA, Ind. — A 19-year-old man was booked into the Madison County Jail Thursday morning facing three Class C felonies in connection with the death of a friend.

Paul J. Coy, of Alexandria, has been charged with Class C felonies reckless homicide and two counts of criminal recklessness with use of a deadly weapon that inflicts bodily harm on another, Madison County Sheriff Ron Richardson said.

A warrant was issued Monday for Coy’s arrest, and he turned himself into the county jail late Wednesday. He was released in lieu of $10,000 bond Thursday evening.

Darian "Stephen" Hurn, 17, of Alexandria, died the day after sustaining internal and head injuries in a crash March 15.

This is what happened, according to Sheriff’s officials:

A 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt driven by Coy — in which Hurn was a passenger — left the roadway and struck a tree on County Road 100 West north of Indiana 128. He was a front seat passenger and was wearing a seat belt. Hurn was taken by helicopter to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis and had been listed in critical condition. His was the most serious condition of the four occupants.

Back-seat passengers were Zoe Mack, 16, and Alexis Kerns, 16. Coy received only minor injuries to his right arm and leg. Mack and Kerns both received internal injuries and both recovered. The girls are students at Alexandria-Monroe High School and should have been in school at the time of the crash, although it remains unknown why they were not in class.

Hurn had attended the school for about two weeks but was no longer a student, said Alexandria-Monroe High School Principal Jim Regenold.

Sheriff’s officials said it appears that Coy was driving too fast. An investigation is ongoing.

The accident occurred about 1:30 p.m.
