STAR Bank Hosts Third Annual Community Service Day

ANDERSON — STAR Financial Bank employees are picking up paint brushes and getting their hands dirty this Monday on Columbus Day as part of STAR's annual Community Service Day.

One hundred and thirty-five area STAR employees, and more than 600 from Indianapolis to Angola, will be working hand-in-hand with local not-for-profit groups and taking part in different activities including cleanups and tree trimming.

STAR has partnered with several different organizations in the Anderson, Muncie and New Castle communities, including Dove Harbor, United Way, The Animal Protection League, Raintree Habit for Humanity, YWCA of Muncie, The Second Harvest Food Bank and The City of Muncie.

Jackson to present program on Chief Anderson

ANDERSON — The Genealogy Department of the Madison County Historical Society will present a program featuring the life and times of Chief William Anderson, our city's namesake, by Madison County Historian Steve Jackson.

The class will be held on Monday at 7 p.m. in the History Center, 15 W. 11th St. There is no fee to attend the class.

One dies in Fremont house fire

FREMONT — Authorities say one person has been found dead after a house fire in northeastern Indiana.

The Steuben County Sheriff's Department says emergency crews arrived late Thursday to find the rural home outside Fremont engulfed in flames.

The Herald Republican reports residents of the home told crews that one person was still inside, but that the flames were too intense for firefighters to enter the house. The identity of the person who died wasn't immediately released.

Board backs site for Indiana fertilizer plant

MOUNT VERNON — County officials in southwestern Indiana are giving the go-ahead on the site picked for a proposed $2.1 billion fertilizer plant even though some residents question whether it is a good spot.
