Police: Car broadsided by driver passing multiple cars

SUMMITVILLE — Police say a driver passing multiple vehicles broadsided another driver's car.

Just after noon Sunday, Brian Hopkins, 27, of Marion, was driving his red 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix south on Indiana 9 in VanBuren Township, just west of Summitville. He then attempted to make a left turn onto County Road 1650 North, said Madison County Sheriff's Department Maj. Brian Bell.

At the same time, Lorraine Hackett, 62, of Anderson, also southbound on Indiana 9, was trying to pass two vehicles in front of her green 2006 Dodge Caravan. She broadsided Hopkins on the driver's side of his vehicle while he was turning, Bell said.

Sheriff's Department officer Steven White responded.

Bell said no charges were made against Hackett. Her passenger, Gleason Hacket, was taken to Community Hospital Anderson for minor pain in his chest and shoulder.
