Elwood police arrest 10 in warrant operation

ELWOOD — Police fanned across the city this week, seeking to execute more than 100 outstanding warrants from Elwood City Court.

Ten arrests were made in the Tuesday operation was still deemed successful, said Elwood Police Chief Sam Hanna. Many of the warrants were for people already serving time in the Department of Correction or otherwise detained. Some warrants had outdated addresses.

The most serious arrest, Hanna said, involved James Ailstock, 36, who was wanted in Tennessee on a charge of armed robbery and in Fountain City, Ind., for driving while suspended. Most of the others were less serious misdemeanors and court-related charges such as failure to make a court appearance.

This is the first such warrant roundup in Hanna's tenure as chief of police, but the practice is fairly common when the number of outstanding warrants gets high. The operation serves as an opportunity to update records as much as a making arrests, he said.

"It's a good idea to do this every once in a while. We get a good idea of where all these people are and where they stand. It's good for keeping up to date," Hanna said.
