Northern Indiana braces for 16-20 inches of snow

INDIANAPOLIS — Snow is falling across Madison County and much of Indiana as parts of the state prepare for up to 20 inches of snow in the first big winter storm of the season.

The National Weather Service is predicting 16-20 inches of snow by Monday morning in the snow belt areas along southern Lake Michigan in northern Indiana that include Michigan City, Ind., as well as southwestern Michigan.

The weather service says snow will taper off over much of the area late Sunday, but "a band of heavy lake effect snow will move into northwest Indiana and southwest lower Michigan and move slowly eastward into Monday night."

Snow also is falling in central Indiana, and Indianapolis is expected to get 1-2 inches Sunday and an additional 2-3 inches overnight.
