ANDERSON — Old National Bank on Wednesday broke ground on a new branch office to replace the 53rd Street banking center the company has outgrown.
"We are thrilled to have an opportunity to break ground in Anderson," said Jeff Howe, regional vice president for Old National. "We think this will be great accommodations for the staff and certainly our customers."
Howe joined other bank and city officials to toss the first shovelfuls of dirt to mark the groundbreaking at 2312 Charles St., just off South Scatterfield Road near the entrance of Hoosier Park Racing and Casino.
He said the 2,500-square-foot banking center will have three drive-up lanes that will be able to handle two cars each, as well as a drive-up ATM machine, which offers greater efficiency and security compared to walk-up ATMs.
Construction will begin immediately and should be complete by November, said Howe.
The new bank "will be more spacious and provide more office space," Howe added. "This will allow us to meet with clients one-on-one, in a more private setting, when discussing financial matters."
Mayor Kevin Smith said Old National has been part of Anderson's economic development and post-recession recovery, noting that a bank representative accompanied a city team on an international economic development trip during his first term as mayor.
"When someone asks where we invest in Central Indiana, all of you are saying Anderson is the right location," Smith told Old National employees.
Kyle Morey, president of the Madison County Chamber of Commerce, said the new branch represents both an opportunity to attract new customers and buy-in to the vision that Anderson is a vibrant community in which to do business.
To support that idea, Morey noted that he's attended at least two business ground-breaking ceremonies a month since January, "and I think that's only going to increase."
Old National Bancorp is the largest financial services holding company headquartered in Indiana, with $9.7 billion in assets. It was founded in Evansville and serves customers with branch offices in Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky and southern Michigan.
