Police: Elderly victim of sexual assault released from hospital

ANDERSON, Ind. — Police are following up on several leads in the investigation of a rape of an elderly woman on Tuesday morning in the Polish Acre neighborhood.

However, no suspects or persons of interest have been identified, said Anderson Police Department spokesman Joel Sandefur on Wednesday afternoon.

According to the victim, the assault happened a little after midnight in her home in the 3600 block of Hamilton Place. The woman, described as being in her 90s by Sandefur, needed to be hospitalized after the attack.

“She’s been released and she’s been really helpful to us,” Sandefur said.

After the attack, police canvassed a three-block radius around the home to search for clues or suspects. Sandefur said despite the large police presence and committing an entire day to the search, they found nothing.

“We have no eyewitnesses, either. We’ve taken some statements from a few people who were in the area and some neighbors, but we don’t have anything yet,” the detective said.

Sandefur reminded the public to always lock their doors and secure their homes each night, but also encouraged people to look out for each other, especially if they have neighbors who are elderly or have children.

“If you hear or see something, even if it’s slightly suspicious, call 911,” Sandefur said. “We want people to look out for each other, and generally, in that neighborhood, they do. But we seem to have lost some of that sense of community in America. People don’t know their neighbors, and unfortunately, they can’t help in these situations.”
