Police: Suspect attacked, ran from officers

ANDERSON, Ind. — A suspect accused of driving while intoxicated, giving a false name, assaulting an officer and running from police Friday night is in custody.

Russell E. Allender, 30, faces a litany of charges racked up when officers pulled over a red Chevrolet Camaro he was driving in the 1200 block of Brown-Delaware Street. Allender remains in the Madison County Jail on $12,000 bail, according to arrest log records.

According to a probable cause affidavit, Allender was using the car horn excessively while driving southbound late Friday night. Officers pulled over the vehicle, which had no license plate, near 13th Street.

Allender was reportedly slurring his speech and had red, bloodshot eyes. He told police his name was “Dustin Thomas.” When an officer attempted to handcuff Allender, he allegedly pushed the officer out of the way, forced the handcuffs off and ran toward a cluster of houses on 13th Street.

Police created a perimeter and tracked down Allender nearby about 15 minutes after he escaped. He was transported to Anderson St. Vincent Regional Hospital for treatment, according to the affidavit. Allender was wanted on charges of probation violation and failure to appear.

Allender has a long history of criminal activity. He pleaded guilty to charges of burglary and theft in 2003 and served a five-year prison sentence. In sentencing, Madison Circuit 6 Judge Dennis Carroll claimed aggravating factors included a “history of delinquent activity, including juvenile adjudication for molestation, and a number of violations while incarcerated, including acts of violence and use of contraband,” according to court records.

Allender also pleaded guilty to charges of criminal confinement and intimidation in 2007 and driving while suspended in 2012, according to court records.
