Clerk candidates discuss service, vote centers

ANDERSON — A seasoned politician is facing a candidate who says he is prepared to tackle the “egotistical officials pursuing lawless agendas” in this year’s race for Madison County clerk.

The clerk, who serves a four-year term, acts as an officer of the court managing a variety of court information including the processing of marriage applications, issuing marriage licenses, performing marriage ceremonies, processing protective orders, filing divorce paperwork and handling the paperwork for probate estates, guardianship and the collection of child support.

Darlene Likens, 70, a Republican, was elected the county clerk in 2010 and has been the Republican Central Committee chairperson and secretary, a precinct committee and vice committee person. She is also the current precinct committee person for Jackson Township.

Likens faces one Republican challenger in her bid for re-election, local businessman Tim Nardoni, 40.

“Being an American citizen is qualification enough, because elections exist for accountability, not lifetime careers,” Nardoni said of his qualifications for county clerk.

He said he also brings expertise to the position through his experience in information technology roles. For more than 21 years, he has collaborated on solutions where problems have existed and “there are always opportunities for improvement in customer care, efficiency, accuracy, cost savings, etc. – always,” Nardoni said.

There are no candidates running in the Democratic Party primary for the clerk’s office.

Both Republican candidates say they have considered having voting centers in Madison County. According to the state, the centers are centralized sites that allow all eligible voters of that community to vote at the site. Unlike polling sites, voting centers do not limit voting to a specific location dependent upon the voter’s home address.

Fewer voting sites would be used with the implementation of voting centers allowing available voting resources such as the poll workers to be pooled.
