CATS' new fleet could arrive mid-summer

Ohio company only bidder for buses

ANDERSON — Within the next few months, there should be several new CATS buses transporting local residents around the city of Anderson.

The Anderson Board of Public Works on Tuesday received one bid for the purchase of a new fleet for the City of Anderson Transit System.

The only bid received was from TESCO (Transportation Equipment Sales Corp.) of Ohio for two different chassis for the 24-passenger buses.

The cost per bus on a Freightliner chassis is $128,947 and on a Ford chassis is $106,368. Both buses operate on diesel fuel.

Rick Garrett, CATS operating manager, said the city may be able to purchase eight buses based on the bid.

The current fleet of buses was purchased in 2007 and all have an average of 250,000 miles. When idle time is included, that number increases to 400,000 miles.

Garrett said if the chassis are available the new buses could be delivered in the next eight to 10 weeks. He said ordering chassis delays the delivery to 10 to 12 weeks.

He said the city will probably purchase the Freightliner chassis because it has a shorter wheel-base and is compatible with the vehicle lifts CATS is using.

“I was surprised there was only one bid,” Garrett said. “At the pre-bid meeting a representative from Midwest Transit was there.”

Garrett said he was also surprised at the bid price the city received for the new buses.

The city has budgeted $208,000 for seven new buses and the federal government will provide 80 percent of the cost.

The cost of eight buses on the Freightliner chassis is $1,031,576. The cost for the Ford chassis would be $850,944.

CATS also intend to replace three Nifty-Lift buses this year.

Garrett said the city will use the state bid, which is through Midwest Transit.

Last year 226,353 people rode the buses and through the first quarter of 2014 there were 58,737 riders.
