Anderson Community Schools Interim Superintendent Tim Edsell has withdrawn his name from consideration to fill the role as schools chief on a permanent basis.

"At this point in time, it is not the best position for me and my family," Edsell said in a prepared statement Monday. Edsell said he will continue in the position of interim superintendent until the end of June.

"Dr. Edsell has performed his duties exceptionally well," said Anderson Board of Trustees President Ben Gale. "He has modeled integrity, strength, and passion for our students."

Gale said Edsell verbally informed him of his decision last week. Edsell was one of two candidates still under consideration by the school board.

"Our hope was to have a final selection made, so that we could present the successful candidate and proposed contract to the public in the coming weeks," Gale said in a statement. "Unfortunately, at this time, the board was not able to determine with enough certainty that we had the right person to fill this position."

In the wake of Edsell's decision to withdraw, Gale said the board has decided to reopen the search for a permanent superintendent.

Gale added that he was initially disappointed when Edsell approached him with the news. "I understand and respect his reasons, but I wasn't expecting that."

Gale said the board will re-advertise the position and use personal contacts to develop a new list of candidates.

"I've become more encouraged that the right person is out there, and it's more important to find the right person," Gale said.

Gale added that even with a revised advertising and interview schedule, the board hopes to have a new superintendent named and ready to assume leadership of the school system by July 1.

Edsell has been serving as interim superintendent since October. Dr. Felix Chow stepped down from that position on Aug. 30, and Beth Clark, assistant superintendent, oversaw the superintendent's duties before Edsell was hired.
