Anderson Head Start moving to new location

ANDERSON — Transition Resources Corp. is moving Anderson's Head Start program to a new location in the fall to better serve families.

The new $570,000 center will be located at 812 W. 13th St., in the former New Hope United Methodist Church building, according to Sherry Edwards, state deputy Head Start director.

Edwards said renovations are planned for the new center but have not yet begun.

"We're very excited to be able to renovate that particular site and offer services in that particular area of town," she said, adding it sits "in the middle" of the population they serve.

Children at least 3 years of age but younger than 5 (as of Aug. 1) are eligible for the Head Start program if their family income is determined to be at or below the federal poverty level. Children in foster care are also eligible.

"The unique feature of Head Start is that we are for servicing the entire family," Edwards said.

Officials are "serving those folks truly in need" by providing a program that focuses on school readiness through five service areas: health, nutrition, education, disability and family services.

Each family has a family service worker who helps them develop goals and build community resources "to ensure all the needs are met," Edwards added.

Transition Resources Corp. (TRC) serves 589 children in Madison and Delaware counties — 260 in Anderson specifically. Edwards said 10 percent of their capacity space is reserved for children with disabilities.

As a federally funded program, she added that TRC has had to lower the number of students served at one time in Anderson, Elwood and Muncie from 611 to 589 with sequestration cuts. There is a waiting list with vacancies filled throughout the year.

Applications for Anderson's Head Start are being accepted Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the center's current location, 2010 Brentwood Drive.

The child's birth certificate and verification of family income are needed to apply.
