Stevens keeps commitment

CONNERSVILLE — New Boston Celtics coach Brad Stevens isn’t so busy with his new job that he had to break a commitment to appear in Connersville’s bicentennial parade.

Stevens appeared in the parade Saturday, fulfilling a promise made to former Butler star and Connersville native Matt Howard.

Howard said he was “shocked” Stevens made the parade after appearing at a news conference Friday in Boston. He told Stevens he could back out, but the coach insisted.

Indy set to move more police to streets

INDIANAPOLIS — The city of Indianapolis is set to announce a plan to put more police officers on the streets to deal with a spike in violence.

A news release Sunday said Mayor Greg Ballard, Police Chief Rick Hite and Public Safety Director Troy Riggs will announce the plan this morning.

Mayoral spokesman Marc Lotter said the plan will put about 100 more officers on the streets.

He says the shift is part of an internal reorganization.

The city recorded 16 homicides in June, and a 16-year-old boy died after being shot outside downtown’s Circle Centre mall following a Fourth of July fireworks show.

Ballard last month vetoed a City-County Council measure to shift $6 million in funds to hire more police officers.
