Two men dead following head-on collision near Alexandria

Sheriff: Cause of accident still under investigation

Authorities are still trying to determine what led to a violent head-on collision early Wednesday morning in which two men died.

Oscar Cardenas, 37, and Antonio Perez, 59, died instantly at the scene of the 6:30 a.m. crash on Indiana 9 near Madison County Road 1300 North, according to Madison County Coroner Marian Dunnichay.

Perez was driving the 1995 GMC Jimmy that was struck as it headed north on Ind. 9. Two other passengers in the vehicle survived what Madison County Sheriff Ron Richardson described as "a very, very violent crash."

Eyewitnesses told investigators that a 2000 Chevrolet Cavalier southbound on Ind. 9 was drifting across the center lane in the minutes before the accident. The driver of that vehicle was Lukas D. Green, 29, of Muncie, said Richardson.

Several victims were trapped in their vehicles. The state highway was closed for at least four hours while emergency crews worked to treat the injured and clear the vehicles off the road.

Daniel Dimas, 35, of Alexandria, and Lyle L. Kress, 17, of Anderson, were passengers in the Jimmy and survived the crash. Dimas was flown by helicopter to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis where he was listed in fair condition Wednesday evening, according to a hospital spokesman.

Kress was flown to St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis, but was later discharged from that facility, a hospital spokesman said.

Green was also flown to Methodist hospital where he was listed in critical condition, late on Wednesday, the hospital spokesman said.

Lukas Green is the father of Van Green, an Anderson boy diagnosed last summer with medulloblastoma, a form of brain cancer.

The Lapel Eagles has held at least two fundraisers for Van, and another local boy, Johnathon Binnion, who was diagnosed with the same disease.

Another fundraiser is planned for Saturday. Lead organizer Bob Turner said the event will take place as scheduled, despite Wednesday's accident.

"It will go on just as planned even if Lukas isn't there," Turner said. "If anything, they (the family) need the help more than ever."
