Haz mat team cleans up Elwood fuel spill

ELWOOD, Ind. —

Hazardous materials teams cleaned up about 20 gallons of spilled fuel at a gas station Tuesday.

Police radio transmissions indicated the spill happened about 5 p.m. According to Elwood Fire Department Chief Brad Compton, a truck headed eastbound on Indiana 28 made a stop at the McClure's gas station near the intersection with Indiana 37 on the east side of Elwood.

Officials believe that a strap securing the truck's fuel tank broke about a quarter mile before it pulled into the gas station. The tank dragged along the road and a line eventually broke, forcing the driver to stop. Compton said most of the spill was contained to a puddle in the gas station's parking lot.

Madison County Hazardous Materials teams were called out to use an absorbing substance, and Compton said that, as of Tuesday night, there was no public safety threat.

Compton said some of the fuel might have leaked into street cracks, and the cleanup for that has been handed off to a private contractor that works with McClure's.

According to Compton, the driver's company is financially responsible for the cleanup. The spill is believed to be accidental, he said.
