Man injured in four-vehicle accident

Police: Alcohol may have been factor

ANDERSON, Ind. — A man believed by police to be intoxicated needed to be extricated after the vehicle he was driving flipped in a four-vehicle accident Wednesday night.

Ronald Aikens, 45, of Anderson, was in stable condition at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis after he suffered head and internal injuries in the collision, said Anderson Police spokesman Joel Sandefur.

Officers in a patrol car noticed a speeding 2008 Chrysler PT Cruiser driven by Aikens about 10:50 p.m. traveling east on Ohio Avenue near Jefferson Street. The officers turned around the patrol car to pull Aikens over, then the PT Cruiser slammed into a parked 1990 Ford F-150 pickup truck on the side of the road, Sandefur said.

Officers watched the Chrysler flip from the impact with the truck. The Chrysler then slid topside on the pavement and momentum carried it into a parked 1997 Chevrolet Venture on the other side of the road. The impact from that collision pushed the Venture into another parked car, a 1993 Oldsmobile Alero, Sandefur said.

Firefighters and medics arrived and needed to cut the PT Cruiser to remove Aikens from the wreckage. Aikens was taken by ambulance to St. Vincent Anderson Regional Hospital and later flown to Indianapolis for his injuries, Sandefur said.

Officers at the scene reported that they smelled alcohol on Aikens’ breath. Sandefur said police are awaiting the results of a blood analysis. Pending the results, Aikens could be charged with operating while intoxicated.

Aikens was alone in the Chrysler, and nobody else was hurt in the accident, Sandefur said.
