Elwood police find over $100,000 in stolen property

ELWOOD, Ind. — Police in Elwood have recovered over $100,000 worth of property stolen from Tipton County.

Officers serving a search warrant Wednesday afternoon at the home, off Indiana 37 and Memorial Drive, found two Harley-Davidson motorcycles valued at upward of $50,000 each, plus a trailer filled with roofing materials and a car that might have also been stolen.

Assistant Chief Phil Caldwell said police had taken two men and a woman  in for questioning, but did not release names. No arrests had been made by press time.

The find came after Elwood Police Department Detectives Nick Oldham and Capt. Scott Bertram got a lead Tuesday afternoon.
It came via a man in Kentucky, who'd driven up to Elwood to buy another trailer, also stolen. He wasn't aware he was buying stolen goods, but became suspicious and alerted law enforcement.
The trailer had been spray painted, "probably to disguise it," Police
Chief Sam Hanna said.
Caldwell said the Kentucky man had been in contact with the trailer's owner to arrange for its return.
Hanna said the investigation would likely involve several agencies, including Elwood, the Tipton County Sheriff's Department and Kentucky law enforcement.
