Elwood man injured in scooter accident

ELWOOD — An Elwood man is in the hospital after a scooter accident Friday night, and police are looking for witnesses.

According to a press release from Madison County Sheriff Ron Richardson on Saturday, Richard P. Hovart, 44, was airlifted to St. Vincent Indianapolis on 86th Street for a serious head injury sustained after his VIP scooter struck a metal box post in the 11000 block of North Indiana 37 near Elwood.

Police dispatch received a call on the accident at about 9:42 p.m. Friday night, and first responders transported Hovart by ambulance from the scene to St. Vincent Mercy Hospital in Elwood. Shortly after, he was taken by helicopter to Indianapolis.

According to the release, MCSD’s Accident Team is investigating the accident. Alcohol containers were found by investigators at the scene, and the team is pursuing blood tests for Hovart.

Richardson is asking anyone with information that might be helpful to investigators to call the MCSD Dispatch Center at 765-642-0221.

Assisting MCSD at the scene were the Elwood Police and EMS, Pipe Creek Fire Department and Madison County Emergency Management.
