INDIANAPOLIS — Online Western Governors University, with students in Madison County and other counties statewide, announced it will be awarding up to $30,000 in new nursing scholarships in the fall.
According to a press release issued by the university, the “Go Further in Nursing” $2,000 scholarships are available to students seeking bachelor’s or master’s degrees in nursing.
“It’s an exciting time to be a nurse in Indiana,” said Kimberly Harper, executive director of the Indiana Center for Nursing, in the release. “As we continue to advance the profession and the quality of care provided by nurses in Indiana, many health care entities are increasingly requiring registered nurses to have at least a bachelor’s degree. WGU Indiana’s new scholarship is well-timed to help Indiana nurses further their careers during a critical time for the profession of nursing.”
Chancellor Allison Barber said WGU was created to help adults attain a college degree in an affordable, accessible manner.
WGU’s online classes provide flexibility while a competency-based model allows students to take as many classes as they can fit into a six-month semester for a flat fee of $3,000, she said.
The average student is 37.
Last year, Mary Carney, a nurse at Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital at St. Vincent in Indianapolis, graduated from WGU with a master’s of science in nursing education.
In the press release, she said she began her bachelor’s degree in 1981, but that “life got in the way.” With four kids and a husband who’d just lost his job, Carney returned to work full time; money issues and her job “obstacles” in her quest for a degree.
Finally, on her 55th birthday, she “realized it was now or never” and completed both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees at WGU.
“Our hope is that more nurses will see this scholarship as the right opportunity to go back to school, complete the next steps in their degrees and go further in their careers — like Mary did,” Barber said. “The time is now.”
The deadline to apply for a WGU Indiana “Go Further in Nursing” scholarship is Sept. 1.
