---- — ANDERSON — The suspect responsible for a Wednesday night burglary and stabbing in rural Anderson was still at large Thursday.

The victim, a woman who lives in the 5900 block of West County Road 250 South, told police she returned home at about 6:30 p.m. and encountered a man in one of the home's bedrooms.

According to Madison County Sheriff's Department Major Brian Bell, the man grabbed her, started battering her and used a knife to stab her multiple times, at least once to one of her hands.

Bell said the woman may have been stabbed on her arm and abdomen. She was transported to Community Hospital for treatment. There was no update on her condition on Thursday.

Officers who arrived on the scene created a perimeter to search for the suspect. K-9 dogs assisting at the scene tracked the suspect for a short distance but eventually lost the scent. Bell said he believes the man fled in a vehicle.

The initial description of the assailant was that of s a white male, roughly 50 years old with a salt and pepper beard and wearing a black jacket. The victim told police she doesn't know the man.

The Madison County Sheriff's Department was assisted by Edgewood Police, Lapel Police, Indiana State Police and Seals Ambulance service.

Bell said the case is still under investigation.
