ANDERSON, Ind. —
Anderson Mayor Kevin Smith got behind the wheel of one of the city’s small street sweepers Wednesday. He was spiffing things up in anticipation of Saturday’s 19th annual Mayor’s Cup Grand Prix go-kart races to be held downtown.
“I believe it’s absolutely fabulous for Anderson and I think it’s fabulous for the Sertoma and the Mayor’s Cup Grand Prix,” said Smith.
The event returns to the downtown area after a number of years when it was held at Mounds Mall.
“It’s a longstanding tradition to have this race in downtown Anderson and I hope that it will remain a tradition for it to be downtown for many years to come,” Smith said.
He noted that the event draws people from outside of Anderson. “It gives us the opportunity to showcase the city a little bit,” said Smith. It also helps to raise funds for the Sertoma Club. Practice and qualifying starts at 9 a.m. Racing runs from noon to 5 p.m. with free admission for spectators.
