Waterbed gardening program set at library

ANDERSON — A presentation on “Waterbed Gardening” is scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday on the third floor of the Anderson Public Library.

The program is part of the 2009 Gardening Series sponsored by the Madison County Master Gardener Association and Purdue University Extension Service.

Suzy Vannatter moved to Elwood five years ago from Kentucky. There she lived on a farm, growing fruit trees, grapes, and a very large vegetable garden. She also raised beef, chickens, and rabbits. She also had a tobacco base.

After coming to Indiana, the family started a very large garden; at this time Vannatter started her waterbed gardening and growing most of her bedding plants. This is done the same as tobacco is growing in Kentucky.

Vannatter will share her knowledge on this subject and how you can do it yourself. She is a member of Alexandria Smalltown Garden Club, Madison County Homemakers, active in the 4-H with her granddaughter and has served on several committees. Working as a family, Calico Farms sells vegetables, beef, lamb at both farmers markets in Elwood and Minnetrista in Muncie.

This event is open to the public with free admission.

On June 20, the public is invited to take a field trip to Loretta Heiniger’s home for a lecture on butterflies.

The Garden Series is held the third Saturday of each month through November. For more information on the Madison County Master Gardener, visit
