Remembering Katie

DALEVILLE, Ind. — Daleville Elementary’s halls were quiet Monday as students paid their respects to classmate Katie Kline, who passed away over the weekend.

Katie, 8, was a second-grader at the school and had been battling cancer on and off since she was diagnosed at the age of 3.

On Monday morning, the school had message boards hanging near the office for students and teachers to write on, “something to allow the kids to have a little bit of closure,” Principal Kim Beard said.

Students also made cards and drew pictures for Katie, she added, and letters and flowers were set on her desk.

Beard said she was taken aback by the reverence the students displayed.

Many had commented to her about how sad they were. She told them she was sad, too.

Beard said Katie wasn’t in school much because of her illness, but when she was there, she carried a smile and was energetic.

Katie often ate lunch with the office staff, and Beard said they’d all grown attached to her.

Katie Kline will be missed by her classmates. Nothing is set in stone, Beard said, but a balloon launch may be held in her memory later this week.
