Lightning strike sparks fire; Elwood home destroyed

ELWOOD, Ind. — A lightning strike sparked an early-morning fire that destroyed a home at 2400 G St.

According to city fire officials, Ronald and Lorraine Bryson's pet dog, a German shepherd, alerted them to the fire in the home's second floor just before 4 a.m.

The couple and their dog escaped without injury, said city spokesman Jeff Howe.

Fire officials said the home was an older residence that had been extensively remodeled. The loss was estimated at $120,000.

A fire crew is still at the scene to guard against flair-ups, said Elwood Fire Chief Brad Compton.

Emergency authorities throughout Madison County said they were not aware of any other problems related to the the overnight thunderstorm.
