Robotics team gets shot at national event

ANDERSON, Ind. — Many residents of Madison County may be unaware that there is a team of talented and capable young engineers in their midst, but after coming home with a regional title, that should change. Team Roboto 447 deserves a little hometown recognition and possibly some financial support to get them to the Championships in St. Louis.

Team Roboto 447, a FIRST Robotics team comprised of junior high and high school students from all over Madison County, won the Regional Championship in Cincinnati last weekend.

The students are mentored by engineers, machinists, electricians, computer programmers, and educators. This year’s robot game is called “Ultimate Ascent.” Alliances of three robots per side score points by launching flying discs through goals, then climbing a tower.

The team is headquartered at XADS in Anderson, and the students fabricate many of the parts at DRN machine shop in Anderson.

The team will be competing in another regional competition at Rose Hulman April 4-6. With the win in Cincinnati, the team has the opportunity to compete on the world stage at the FIRST championships in St. Louis, where teams from all over the United States and several foreign countries come together to find out who is the best of the best.

Before that, however, the team faces the task of affording the trip. The registration fee alone is $5,000, and travel costs will probably be around $2,000. The team is reaching out to local businesses and individuals for support.

“We need $7,000, and we don’t know where we are going to get it on such short notice” said team president Tony Soverns.
