Performances Friday night at store

Chesterfield church to host banquet
The Chesterfield Christian Church Disciples of Christ, 207 E. Plum St., has planned its annual mother-daughter event 6:30 p.m. Friday in the fellowship hall. Men of the church will serve the meal of baked stead, scalloped potatoes, green beans, rolls, dessert and drinks. The banquet is called Babushka’s Garden. A Russian/Ukrainian presentation will be given by Mary Jackson, who will be dressed in authentic Ukrainian costume. Call the church office (765) 378-7896 to make reservations. Mother Daughter Banquet at Elwood
Elwood Bible Baptist Church will be holding its annual Mother Daughter Banquet at 6 p.m. Saturday. There will be a nice meal, skits, games, sacred music, and door prizes donated by local businesses, organizers said. The speaker will be Megan Clark, a recent Bible College graduate from Fairhaven Baptist College and a member of Elwood Bible Baptist Church. Hamburgers, bake sale on Saturday
The Second Chance Baptist Church, 231 W. 10th St., Anderson, will conduct a bake sale and hamburger fry from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday. In addition to baked items, hamburger and a soft drink will be sold for $1.50.
Iwo Jima survivor to speak in Elwood
Marion “Frank” Walker of Brownstown will speak on his World War II experience at the Battle of Iwo Jima at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Elwood Public Library. He is one of the few living survivors of this battle. He spoke 80 times in 2007 in area schools and libraries. For more information, call (765) 552-5001.
Fairmount to host citywide rummage
Fairmount’s second townwide rummage will be held Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., rain or shine. The event is being sponsored by Unity of Fairmount Extension Homemakers Club. Church to serve beef and noodles
The Ladies Group of Central Community Chapel, 1004 Indiana Ave., will host an all-you-can-eat beef noodles dinner from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday. Cost is $5 for adults and $2.50 for children.
Daleville Lions to host breakfast
The Daleville Lions Club, Sixth and Edwards streets, Daleville, will host its community breakfast from 7 to 10 a.m. Saturday. Cost is $6 for all you can eat, and children 6 and under, eat free. The menu includes eggs and sausage, biscuits and sausage gravy, pancakes, coffee, milk and orange juice. The club holds a community breakfast the first Saturday of each month. Each month its proceeds benefit area organizations. This month they will benefit Daleville Junior Baseball.
Rummage sale to help Relay for Life
The City Slickers will host a rummage sale from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the United Auto Workers Union Hall, 29th Street and Madison Avenue, Anderson. All proceeds from the sale will be donated to the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life.
‘Meet Candidates’ at Middletown
The Middletown Historical Society is hosting a “Meet the Candidates” baked potato luncheon from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Middletown Historical Center. All of the candidates for Henry County offices have been invited to attend what has become an election-year tradition at the Middletown Historical Society. The luncheon will feature 1-pound baked Idaho potatoes with a choice of many toppings. Baked sweet potatoes, hot dogs, drinks and dessert will also be available. Proceeds from this event will benefit the Historical Society’s operating fund. The Historical Center is located in Gazebo Park on Locust Street in downtown Middletown. Wilkinson students in piano recital
Joan Cupp will present her piano students in a recital at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Wilkinson Church of Christ, Indiana 109.
The program will open with a six-synthesizer orchestra featuring Kayla Grass, Joanna Taylor, Tony Kinnett, Rachel Trimmer and Joy and Johanna Hunt. There will be a mother/son duet (Amy and Kyler Schaetzle) and a grandmother/granddaughter duet (Jordan Tatom and Mary Chastain.
Church offers 13-week finance class
Madison Park Church of God will offer Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University in May. The 13-week program on personal finance is designed to empower people to manage their money better, eliminate debt and build wealth. During the courses, participants will learn how to make a budget that they will understand and actually use, getting out of debt and staying that way. The classes are open to the public. A free preview/orientation session will be held Sunday at 10:30 a.m. The first session is Sunday, May 11. Relay for Life captains to meet Monday
The American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life of Madison County’s team captain meeting will take place at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Community Hospital Education Center on North Madison Avenue. The final meeting before the event will be held at Anderson High School, organizers said.
Legion to serve broasted chicken
A broasted chicken dinner will be held from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the American Legion Post 127, 4118 Columbus Ave., Anderson. Cost is $7 for 1/2 broasted chicken, mashed potatoes with gravy, green beans, roll and iced tea or coffee. The event is being sponsored by the Legion Auxiliary.
Local performers at Holiday World
Rehearsals are under way as Holiday World’s 2008 cast of entertainers prepares for the park’s opening on Saturday. This year’s cast of musical entertainers includes Anderson residents Kara Ligon and Kayla Price. The park’s country music show, “Rockin’ the Country,” will open at Holiday World on Saturday. The new “Sing Praise” gospel show will premiere May 17 along with the “Retro Active” music and dance show. The new “HoliDazzles” children’s show will debut the following weekend. Star Spangled Carousel and Reindeer Games premiere Saturday; Splashin’ Safari opens May 10 with the new Kima Bay family waterplay complex, including seven water slides. Retired teachers to meet at Flagship
The Madison County Retired Teachers Association will convene its spring meeting at noon Monday, May 12, in the community room at the Ivy Tech Community College Flagship Building, 7307 Quality Circle Drive. The main program will feature a series of three break-out sessions from which members can select. Session one will feature a representative from Grueninger Tours who will present information about upcoming worldwide tour opportunities. Session two will be presented by Sudi Naraine, state manager of Association Member Benefits Advisors, who will provide an update about benefit programs offered through the Indiana Retired Teachers Association.
The third session presenter will be Darla Couch, a representative of Court-Appointed Special Advocates, who will discuss opportunities for volunteerism through that organization. Member registration for the meeting begins at 11:30 a.m. with luncheon to begin at noon. A brief business meeting will follow the main program. Money seminar set for Wednesday
A Smart Money Seminar will be presented from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Reardon Auditorium, 1015 E. Fifth St., Anderson University Campus, Anderson. The free seminar which is open to the public is being sponsored by Star Financial Bank and Anderson University.
The topic of the seminar is “Internet Security at Home,” with 10 ways to protect your family from Internet fraud and abuse. Presenter will be Don Smith, information security manager with Star Financial Bank and a member of the U.S. Secret Service Electronic Crimes Task Force in Chicago.

Baseline screenings available on May 9
Life Line Screening will be at the Chesterfield First Freewill Baptist Church, 23 Lake St., on May 9. Appointments will begin at 9 a.m.
Recommended baseline screenings include stroke/carotid artery, atrial fibrillation, abdominal aortic aneurysm and peripheral arterial disease. Additional screenings can be added for a more comprehensive risk assessment and include C-Reactive Protein, a blood marker for vascular disease and diabetes; complete Lipid Panel including HDL/LDL and total cholesterol; glucose, a measure of blood sugar level which can determine one’s risk for diabetes; and an ultrasound screening for osteoporosis.
