Super Kids Classic race on May 31

The Anderson Soap Box Derby will stage an inaugural Super Kids Classic race at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 31. The race is for boys and girls, ages 8 to 17, who face either mental or physical challenges. The race will be held at Derby Downs on Madison Avenue, and each racer will get two trips down the track, in a dual passenger race car. An adult will accompany each racer down the hill, with the racer controlling the car but with the adult able to step in when necessary. The winner of this race will advance to the National Super Kids World Championship race on July 26.

According to a press release, these dual-passenger cars are designed to have the appearance of the cars from professional racing series, such as NASCAR, IRL and NHRA. For additional information or questions, call Mike Ray at (765) 642-8640 or go to andersonsbd.googlepages.com.

Car wash Saturday at 38th and Main

Anderson Babe Ruth/Cal Ripken Baseball League will have a car wash from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday in the parking lot of Dr. Gary Young’s office at 38th and Main streets. Refreshments will also be available. Proceeds from the car wash will benefit ball diamond restoration projects.

Dinner to be served Saturday at Madison Christian

A homemade chicken and dumplings dinner will be held from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Saturday at Madison Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), 1015 Sheridan St., Frankton. The menu also includes mashed potatoes, green beans, slaw, roll, drink and banana split cake. Cost is $7 for adults and $3 for children under 10. Carryout will be available.

Hospital offers free clinical breast exams

Community Hospital Anderson offers free clinical breast exams once a month for women in Madison County. Jeanne Kirk, R.N., breast health specialist, will perform exams Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Women’s Center. If abnormality is detected, the patient will be referred to her physician. The women without a physician will be referred to health care providers who are accepting new patients. Register by calling (765) 298-5139. Upcoming dates for free clinical breast exams include June 13, July 11, Aug. 8, Sept. 12, Oct. 10, Nov. 14 and Dec. 12.

Singers needed for Anderson Idol contest

Singing contestants are needed for the Anderson Idol competition, to be held Saturday, May 17, from noon to 4 p.m. at Pay Less Super Market, 31st and Meridian streets in Anderson. Entry forms are available at the customer service window and entry deadline is Monday. There is no entry fee and children age 13 through 12th grade are eligible to participate. Return entry form with an audition tape, CD, DVD or other recordable media. A committee will review entries and choose 12 finalist to compete on May 17. Prizes will be awarded for first-, second- and third-place winners; all participants will receive prize bags. There will be a carnival at the market from noon to 3 p.m., with games and activities for kids. Refreshments will be available for purchase. This event is a partnership between Gateway Association Inc. and Pay Less Super Markets, in connection with Pay Less’ annual May “Tips for Tots” fundraiser, which is part of the Little 500 Festival.
