Park, walking trail closed until 2014

ANDERSON — Edgewater Park and the walking trail from the park to the Truman Bridge is now closed through the end of the year for the levee project.

The Army Corp of Engineers is in charge of the project.

Sale, cookout to benefit AAU team

ALEXANDRIA — The eighth grade AAU Netter-Warriors boys basketball team will host a garage sale and cookout today and Saturday at the corner of Ind. 28 and Ind. 9 across from Ricker's gas station. The rummage sale will begin at 8 a.m. and cookout at 10:30 a.m.

All proceeds will benefit the travel expenses for the upcoming Nationals Tournament in Orlando, Fla. The team will leave July 10.

Truck hits bridge after project announced

INDIANAPOLIS — A truck struck a low overpass on Interstates 65-70 in downtown Indianapolis one day after Indiana highway officials announced a 90-day closure of the key freeway to lower pavement and prevent future truck strikes.

Frequent truck strikes on seven low bridges over the freeway led the Indiana Department of Transportation to announce Wednesday it would close the key freeway serving downtown Indianapolis for up to 90 days this fall to lower the pavement below seven bridges at the South Split.

Furloughs near at Crane base

CRANE — Officials at southern Indiana's Crane Naval Surface Warfare Center say one-day-a-week unpaid furloughs are about to start for its thousands of civilian workers.

Base officials say the furloughs caused by automatic federal budget cuts will start the week of July 8 and continue through September. The base's nearly 3,100 Navy employees and 800 Army workers will see a 20 percent pay cut during that time.

The American Federation of Government Employees local that represents Crane workers argues the furloughs won't save money and will hurt projects done at the base southwest of Bloomington.
