Academic Accolades: Feb. 23

Local students named to Trine University president's list

ANGOLA — Several local students were named to the Trine University president's list for the fall 2013 semester. To be named to the president's list, a student must have at least a 3.75 grade point average on a 4.0 scale and carry at least 15 credit hours.

— Benjamin Badger of Pendleton, a junior majoring in general business.

— Kelly Scholer of Anderson, a junior majoring in psychology.

— Alexandra Slick of Pendleton, a sophomore majoring in math education.

— James Taylor of Anderson, a senior majoring in chemical engineering.

Coats congratulates Yorktown’s Ryan Tucker on acceptance to West Point

WASHINGTON — Sen. Dan Coats, R-Ind, announced that Ryan Tucker of Yorktown has received acceptance into the United States Military Academy at West Point. Coats nominated Tucker, a student at Yorktown High School, for an appointment to West Point.

“There is no greater honor for an American citizen than wearing the uniform in service to the United States,” said Coats. “I congratulate Ryan on this distinguished honor and believe his talents and abilities will make him an outstanding cadet. I look forward to hearing of his continued success.”

Tucker is a member of the National Honor Society and was selected to represent Yorktown High School’s baseball team at the 2013 Indiana High School Athletic Association Student Leadership Conference.

Anderson’s Abigail Helvering earns All-American Honors

WOOSTER, Ohio – Abigail Helvering, a sophomore political science major at The College of Wooster and a graduate of Cathedral High School, earned All-American Honors at the 2014 American Collegiate Moot Court Association National Tournament, held last month at Arizona State University’s Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law. Helvering, a resident of Anderson, joined senior teammate Daniel Cohen in advancing to the Final Four in the oral argument competition. She also finished 15th in the individual orator competition.
