Support group to focus on needs of parents of teen parents

ANDERSON — About 8 percent of Hoosier children live in a home where a grandparent is head of household, according to the AARP (Indiana). Many teenage parents are doing their best to balance school work, a new baby, a job, and learning how to parent. Behind the scenes is a grandparent trying to do the right thing.

The focus of a new group is to support the grandparents who have opened heart and home for their teen parent and new baby. This group, called “Parents of Teen Parents,” will have its inaugural meeting at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 1, at New Horizons United Methodist Church, 611 E. 53rd St.

Free sessions will run every first Saturday at 10 a.m. but will take a summer break. Topics in the one-hour sessions will include self-care, strengthening communication, conflict resolution, obtaining educational resources, financial aid, and more. The group is on Facebook at www.facebook.com/ptpsupport.

Pastor Gina Kirkland as well as Michelle Cramer, a counselor at Aspire, will provide information to attendees. Cramer is a licensed clinical social worker and has been employed at Aspire Indiana (formerly Center for Mental Health) for almost 14 years.

For information, call Crystal Everhart at 610-8528 or email ptpsupport@indy.rr.com.
