Mike Ernst named to fill board spot

MARKLEVILLE — Madison County Republican Chairman Russ Willis has named a replacement for Sally Gustin on the Markleville Town Council.

Mike Ernst, the only applicant for the position, will take over for Gustin, who passed away in November. Willis said Ernst is a community-minded person who has worked with Boy Scouts in the past. He is retiring from the Scouts and will attend his first meeting in January.

Health center receives grant

ANDERSON -- The Madison County Community Health Center was awarded a $3,000 grant from a Doris and Warren Buffett foundation. The “Giving With Purpose” program was the brainchild of Doris’s Sunshine Lady Foundation and it is the world’s first open online course on effective charitable giving.

Anderson resident Lelia Kelley’s participation in the online program allowed her to place a local nonprofit to compete among philanthropic and nonprofit management students. The foundation’s final decision was to congratulate all 40 finalists by providing a grant award to each of them.

Hiking trail faces concerns

TERRE HAUTE — A new hiking trail planned along the Wabash River in western Indiana is on hold while officials conduct tests to determine if parts of the pathway might be tainted with contaminants.

The new trail will sit atop a long-defunct road paved with cinders that are now regarded as an environmental contaminant. Testing along the path must be done before construction can begin. Terre Haute city planner Pat Martin said that if no environmental problems are revealed, the city plans to cap the cinders with soil and pave them with crushed stone.

Indy police fatally shoot armed man

INDIANAPOLIS — Indianapolis police fatally shot a man who fled officers at a park and holed himself inside a house with a gun. Police say it’s not clear why the man fled an officer who approached him at Brookside Park on the city’s east side Wednesday, but they say they believe the man was on probation for a charge of driving while intoxicated.
