Libraries closing for holidays

ELWOOD — The Elwood Public Library, Frankton Community Library and the Ralph E. Hazelbaker Library will be closed on Dec. 24-25, Dec. 31 and Jan. 1 for the holidays.

Gas leak prompts evacuation

MUNCIE — A natural gas leak from a damaged line caused about an hour-long evacuation of Ball State University's football stadium and football training complex.

The leak was reported Thursday morning after a construction crew apparently damaged a line near the stadium. No injuries were immediately reported.

Nearly 300 damage reports in Lafayette

LAFAYETTE — Authorities have compiled nearly 300 reports of damage from last month's tornado-packed storms in the Lafayette area as they work to boost Indiana's appeal for federal disaster aid.

Tippecanoe County emergency management agency staffers worked this week with state and federal representatives to check on areas with reported damage from the Nov. 17 storms that slammed the state with about two dozen tornadoes.

Deal requires removal of 'petcoke' piles

CHICAGO — Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan says an agreement with an Indiana company to remove petroleum coke from Chicago's Southeast Side will help protect residents from a serious health threat. Madigan and Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced the deal Thursday.

The material called "petcoke" is a byproduct of oil refining that's been accumulating along Midwest shipping channels, sparking health and environmental concerns.

Teen charged in thefts eyed in burglaries

FORT WAYNE — An 18-year-old Leo-Cedarville man has been arrested and charged with two counts of theft, with Allen County Sheriff's Department detectives still investigating potential involvement with other thefts and burglaries from vehicles and homes in the Leo-Cedarville area.

Montana Warner was taken into custody Wednesday, according to a news release. The homeowners association from Pioneer Village recently distributed letters to homeowners warning them to be cautious.
