Library closed today for New Year’s

ANDERSON — Anderson Public Library will be closed today in celebration of New Year’s Day.

The Main Library will reopen Thursday at 9:30 a.m., and the Lapel Branch will reopen at 11 a.m. Visit www.andersonlibrary.net.

Town hall flood repairs uncertain

ELLETTSVILLE — Leaders of a southern Indiana community still aren’t sure what repairs are needed on a town hall that was badly damaged by flooding last week.

Some Ellettsville workers have moved to temporary offices in a business and retail center while the town clerk-treasurer and utility office are working from Town Hall’s second floor.

Population growth lags behind US

INDIANAPOLIS — New population estimates show Indiana’s population continues growing at a slower rate than the national average but is increasing faster than its four neighboring states.

Census Bureau estimates released Monday show Indiana’s population grew by about 33,000 people from 2012 to 2013, giving it a 0.51 percent growth rate. Nationally, the population is estimated to have risen by 0.7 percent over those two years.

Two plead guilty to computer hacking

LAFAYETTE — Two former Purdue University students have pleaded guilty to charges they hacked into the computer accounts of their professors in order to change their course grades.

Engineering majors Roy Sun and Sujay Sharma pleaded guilty in Tippecanoe County court Monday to felony computer tampering charges. They are scheduled to be sentenced in February.

Woman dies when trapped in house fire

INDIANAPOLIS — Authorities say a woman who used a wheelchair died after being trapped inside her family’s burning home in Indianapolis.

Fire Lt. Bonnie Hensley says the mother and sister of the 35-year-old woman both suffered smoke inhalation and burns while trying to rescue her Monday night from the house on the city’s south side.

New mayor elected in Greenfield

GREENFIELD — A construction company official has been elected to replace a central Indiana mayor who died three weeks ago.

Republican precinct committee members picked 70-year-old Chuck Fewell as Greenfield’s new mayor during a caucus meeting Monday evening. He will complete the last two years of Dick Pasco’s term as mayor. Pasco died Dec. 10 after suffering a recurrence of liver cancer.
