Elwood chamber to meet Jan. 31

ELWOOD — The Elwood Chamber of Commerce will host its 2013 annual meeting Friday, Jan. 31, with dinner to begin at 6 p.m. at the East Main Street Christian Church, 1801 Main St.

Awards and entertainment by the Ball State University Singers will follow.

Ticket prices for Chamber members are $15 individual, $25 couple or $95 for a table of eight. Non-chamber member prices are $17 individual, $30 couple or $115 for a table of eight. Tickets are on sale through Jan. 16.

Socrates Café planned for Monday

ANDERSON — The next Socrates Café, a local discussion group, will meet from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Madison County History Center, 11 E. 11th St..

Past members and new people are welcome. There are no dues, membership requirements or other obligations.

Owners of dog found frozen charged

JASPER — The owners of a dog that survived being frozen to the ground in southern Indiana during this week’s subzero cold wave are facing animal neglect charges.

Fifty-year-old George Kimmel and 55-year-old Dorothy Kimmel were charged after their Sheltie mix, Peanut, was found frozen to the ground Monday night outside their Dubois County home.

Court to hear foul ball injury case

INDIANAPOLIS — The Indiana Supreme Court is taking up the case of a woman who wants to sue a minor-league baseball team over injuries she suffered when a foul ball struck her during a game.

The state’s high court was scheduled to hear oral arguments today in Juanita DeJesus’ effort to sue the Gary SouthShore RailCats. Court records state that DeJesus suffered fractured facial bones causing blindness in her left eye when a ball struck her face during a May 2009 game in Gary.
