NAACP meets Sunday

ANDERSON — The Madison County Branch NAACP will conduct a general membership meeting at 3 p.m. Sunday at the branch office, 1015 W. 15th St.

Agenda topics will include the president’s report and community concerns. The community is invited and encouraged to attend.

Genealogy class set

ANDERSON — The Genealogy Department of the Madison County Historical Society, Inc. Is presenting a class on using general resources for the researcher. The class will give information on such things as - where to look - libraries, courthouses, churches - and what to look for in your family search. The class will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, May 6 at History Center, 11 W. 11th St. There is no charge to attend this class. Please call 765-683-0052 with questions.

Indiana added to Discovery Trail

PORTAGE — Trails in northwest Indiana are being added to a national walking trail that stretches from Delaware to California.

The Times of Munster reports the northern route of the 6,800-mile-long American Discovery Trail will cut diagonally from North Judson in Starke County through portions of LaPorte, Porter and Lake counties and continue into Illinois at Lansing.

The northern route previously only went as far north in Indiana as the Kankakee River.

Furniture chain to expand

CHICAGO — A Michigan-based furniture retailer is planning to expand into the Chicago area, bringing about 600 jobs.

Gov. Pat Quinn announced Friday that Art Van Furniture will open five new stores in Illinois and a sixth in northern Indiana.

Art Van Furniture stores will be located in Chicago, Batavia, Bolingbrook and Orland Park. The Indiana store is planned for the Merrillville-Hobart area.

Trout season will open on schedule

INDIANAPOLIS — The Indiana Department of Natural Resources says trout fishing season will open as scheduled Saturday despite high water and swift currents.

DNR officials urge anglers to exercise caution, especially if they’re fishing around dams or in flooded streams.

Man becomes violent at police

FORT WAYNE — Northeastern Indiana police say a man being questioned about a stabbing went berserk as he was being escorted to a hospital and several officers and stun guns were needed to subdue him.

As several officers were escorting the man in an elevator at police headquarters, the man suddenly became violent and attacked them. Foster says the officers used electrical stun devices multiple times on the man before he was subdued and taken to a local hospital.
