Storm Water Awareness Month

ANDERSON — April is Storm Water Awareness Month throughout Madison County. Storm water run-off occurs when precipitation from rain or snowmelt flows over the ground.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requires designated communities to create a plan for storm water to protect environment and to ensure public health.

Emmis, the storm water awareness frog, will make an appearance today at Anderson Speedway as the gates open for the races.

Well water testing offered

ANDERSON — The Madison County Soil and Water Conservation announced it is in the last week of offering well water testing.

The Well Water Initiative is offered to anyone who gets their drinking water from a well. Testing will be done for nitrates and total coliform for $30 (regularly priced at more than $60).

You must purchase a test kit before Tuesday from the office located at 182 W. 300N.

The date to bring your water samples back is Wednesday. For more information, call 644-4249, ext. 3.

Zumbathon fundraiser set

ANDERSON —  A Zumbathon for Carol Rankin and Susan Clemons will be held from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Mounds Mall, Anderson, in the old Sears space, 2109 S. Scatterfield Road, Anderson.

Cost is $17.

Rankin is battling cancer and Clemons is recovering from a stroke. All proceeds will be divided 50/50 to help each of them during their time of recovery.

Instructors are Tylee Webber and Melissa Lash.

CHA to host health fair

ANDERSON —   Community Hospital Anderson will host the 15th annual Fair for the Young at Heart at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 27 in the hospital’s lower level. This event for seniors will include health information from local vendors, health screenings, entertainment, a light luncheon and door prizes.

Dr. Bill VanNess, Indiana health commissioner, will be the speaker. Call 298-2533 to register. Registration is required and seating is limited.

Bridge to close for two months

SULPHUR SPRINGS — The Indiana Department of Transportation plans to close U.S. 36 at the Little Creek bridge, west of Sulphur Springs, on Monday, April 29. The highway is expected to reopen to traffic in mid-July.

The official detour reroutes motorists along Indiana 3, 38 and 109.

Rainfall records set

INDIANAPOLIS — The National Weather Service says the cities of Fort Wayne and Indianapolis both set records for rainfall in a day, with both cities receiving more than two inches of rain.

The weather service reports that 2.32 inches of rain fell in Fort Wayne on Thursday, setting the record for the most rain ever to fall in the city on April 18. That broke the old mark of 0.97 inches.

The weather service says 2.29 inches fell in Indianapolis on Thursday, breaking the mark for that date of 1.27 inches that fell in 1887.
